  • Storage, Style and Satisfaction

Coffee Tables for the Rustic Living RoomI have developed a sincere appreciation for furniture pieces that include hidden storage compartments. Specifically, coffee and end tables. With a family of four humans and two dogs, there are plenty of odds and ends (and, frankly, ugly stuff) that need to be hidden away from visitors and ourselves alike.

What makes a great coffee table? For us, it’s a combination of things. We gather around its edges some Fridays and Saturdays for family game night, so it requires a sizeable surface. As an added bonus, said games can be stored inside the coffee table for easy accessibility. It must be sturdy and easy to wipe clean after the countless art projects it hosts. Since a table of the proportions we desire will likely be the centerpiece of the room, it must have rustic style and character. Last, but certainly not least, it must function as a comfortable footstool. Yes, we are a casual family that puts our feet up on the table when we’re relaxing.

Finding a coffee table that checks all the boxes can be quite a daunting task. I’m always on the lookout for one, even though we are more than satisfied with the one we have now. You never know, however, when the one you love is suddenly broken beyond repair and you have to replace it. Shopping in a state of desperation can lead to bad purchases, so having a reserve selection of furniture is never a bad idea. If you find an artisan or design that you love, add the contact information into your idea file, along with a photo, so it’s at the ready when you need it.

Storage, style and satisfaction…the ingredients for the Reclaimed Barnwood Coffee Table with Drawers. Add a smile and a sign of happiness as you put your feet up on its reclaimed barnwood top, and all the world is right for a while.

  • Come in and Have a Seat

Log Benches work in many spaces around the bedroom. Our house has become quite a neighborhood gathering spot for the kids. I both love and loathe the fact that a series of local boys traipse freely in the front door and out the back…over and over again, as if they are doing laps around the house. I love that parents trust us and the kids make themselves at home, but I loathe that they track “things” all through the house because they don’t stop to take their shoes off and/or empty their pockets before they come through the door.

As we all know, boys are always on the move. Slowing down, let alone stopping to do something, is far from their nature. When I was thinking of a way to get the boys to take their shoes off before they came into the house, I knew I had to be creative.

Luckily, I have great spaces inside both the front and back doors. I found two sturdy yet sophisticated Cedar Lake Log Slab Benches and ordered them in lengths suitable for the spaces. An attractive yet durable rug went down on the floor, covering the entire expanse from entry to under the bench. The entire ensemble provides a visual reminder to the boys that shoes belong on the rug only, and they have a great opportunity to come in, sit down, and shed the shoes.

Now, whether or not my solution works is yet to be determined. Stay tuned.

  • A Win-Win Sleeping Situation

Futons for a Comfortable Night's SleepAs most people are aware, one of the hallmarks of being a military family is frequent moves. We are preparing to embark on yet another Permanent Change of Station (PCS) move in less than a month. This will be our fifth move, so we are starting to “get the hang of” the entire experience. Although, every move is different and we always seem to learn something new.

We always opt for a moving company to pack and move the majority of our household goods. We do have a utility trailer and move a few things ourselves…mostly family heirlooms, items of value, and the assorted items that the moving company will not transport. One thing we have moved ourselves, from our very first PCS, is the mattress from our futon.

While that may seem to most like an odd choice, we have a specific purpose for the futon mattress. Oftentimes, we get the keys to our new house several days before our household goods arrive. The futon mattress functions as a comfortable sleeping solution until we get our bed. We just set the mattress on the floor of our bedroom, slip some sheets and blankets on it, and we get a good night’s rest. (I have a hard time sleeping on an air mattress, but am more than comfortable on a futon mattress.)

We have even used the mattress for overnight getaways. It fits perfectly into the bed of our truck, which has a bed cover. It’s a cozy place to sleep, but it’s comfortable and it keeps us warm and dry.

Have a move planned in your near future? Consider packing your Lakeland Cedar Log Futon mattress for a win-win sleeping situation.

  • Great Guns!

Great Gun Cabinets for the Gun EnthusiastThis year is flying by. I’ve heard that as you get older, time goes faster. I don’t know if that’s scientifically true, but it certainly feels that way. It seems like just a couple of weeks ago we were digging out from Snowzilla 2016, but today I looked up at the calendar and realized we’re almost in June. Heck, before I know it Christmas shopping season will be here again! Gaw!!

I hope that you are looking forward to a fun-filled summer full of family activities. It seems like time slows down during the summer months, which is something that I personally cherish about the season. Before we can get too far into summer adventures, though, we need to take some time to celebrate the dads in our lives that do so many things that make those summer getaways fun and enjoyable. If you’re like me, it can be difficult to think of a gift for the man that has shaped me in so many ways into the person I am today.

If the dad in your life is a hunter or gun collector, maybe he would love an attractive and secure way in which to store and display his prized collection. What better way to construct a gun cabinet than to use reclaimed barn wood? The rustic qualities of the lumber lend an extra element of natural beauty to the polished barrels gleaming from behind the glass display doors. Dad will smile with pride whenever he catches a glimpse of his great guns stored inside that Cottage Barnwood Gun Cabinet.

Happy Father’s Day and happy summer!

  • Previously Loved Pieces

Two Door Bookcases with NailheadsFurniture comes in all shapes and sizes, with wide variations in quality and appearance. Some pieces are made to withstand outdoor elements, others for portability, and still others for longevity. The choices in furniture are as numerous as the reasons you use it.

How do you shop for furniture? Do you ask family members and friends for their hand-me-downs? Visit the local thrift shop to find a piece ripe for reclaiming? Check out the curb selection in town on dump day? Drive to the local furniture megastore to browse the mind-boggling options available? Or, perhaps you consult the Google machine in an effort to find what you’re looking for.

I used to be a big-box store buyer. After all, they do all they can to entice you into their store. One local establishment used to serve fresh-baked cookies right inside the front door. And once you’re inside, the smell of leather and new furniture is a lure that draws you further inside the depths of the store. Before you know it, you’re plopped down on a super comfy sofa enjoying the last of the cookies and a good show on the TV (which is also for sale). It’s not a bad way to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon.

Then I discovered the satisfaction of reclaiming and refinishing used furniture. I still remember my first piece. It was an ugly oak baker’s rack, rickety as all get out, and it was left curbside for dump pickup. I hauled it home, sturdied it with some glue and nails, and put a coat of paint and glaze on it. It’s still a source of pride and joy, taking up residence as a prominent piece in my living room. From that piece on, I was hooked. Previously loved pieces are now my first choice for furniture. The Rustic Mountain Barnwood 2 Door Bookcase with Nailheads reminds me of that.

  • Surrounded by Love

Share these love seats with someone specialHave you ever stopped for a second, looked around, and realize you are surrounded by love? I don’t mean like in one of those sappy movies where a person looks around and sees all the couples and feels pitifully alone. I mean that everything you are touching and feeling at that very moment is something that you love?

I had that moment just yesterday. My husband and I just realized a years-long dream of owning a Jeep Wrangler, the new puppy we’d searched months for and our adult dog were romping gleefully in the living room, and I was working from my warm and comfortable home office. I realized just how grateful I was in that moment, and a warm soul-fulfilling feeling washed over me.

Some people long to decorate their home with reclaimed barnwood furniture, but the substantial price tag necessitates the need for them to wait. And plan. And dream. So much so that when they are finally able to purchase that furniture and bring it into their home, their souls are fulfilled. The search is over. The waiting, the wanting…the dream is realized. Love surrounds them.

If you have a dream, don’t get discouraged if you have to wait to make it come true. It will be so much sweeter when it becomes a reality. Even the cushions on the Cottage Barnwood Upholstered Loveseat will be softer and more welcoming as they surround you with love.

  • Wood You, Could You, Live in a Barn?

Live the Barn Life with Log BedsI am a mother of two young boys. They love the riddles and rhymes of Dr. Seuss books, especially my youngest. I used to not be much of a fan, because the stories seem absolute nonsense. However, as I’ve read them to my children and absorbed the messages buried in the nonsense, I have come to appreciate them. I even paraphrased Green Eggs & Ham as the title of this post.

Sometimes silly nonsense has a fitting place in our adult lives. What better way to brighten a day than to laugh? Not a giggle, or a chuckle, but a deep all-consuming laughter that comes from your very soul and doesn’t stop until you are crying with joy. It’s one of the greatest things in life.

Dr. Seuss was a dreamer. That is evident in the books that he wrote. I’m a dreamer too…it is what propels me forward and to do bigger and greater things than I thought I could achieve. One of my dreams is to live in a barn. I’m not necessarily talking about an agricultural icon that has stood on the weathered plains for nearly a century. Instead, I could cultivate and reclaim the wood from one of those structures and use it with reckless abandon in my custom-built home. Barnwood is not only useful for furniture, but also as a wall covering and accent trim around elements in the home. Some may feel using the old splintered wood from barns in a new home is nonsense, but I’m just silly enough to realize that dream someday.

With this Rustic Barn Door Bed, I can, I will, live in a barn!

  • Storing, Studying, Sewing & Stuff

Writing Desks with Multiple FunctionsWe avoid buying new furniture. I hate to admit it, but it’s true. We’ve had our leather sofa and chairs for more years than we’ve been married. They are scratched, dirty, marred and in bad need of either being slipcovered or just replaced. But we resist.

Don’t get me wrong…I love that new sofa smell. Mmmm, I can almost detect that warm, comfy smell of supple leather. But, alas…we are a military family. We move every 2-3 years, and we never know what the floor plan of our next house is going to be. It is inevitable that during every move, some of our furniture will be broken or completely destroyed. And if the movers don’t manage to do it, our two boys will. And so…we persist with beat-up furniture.

When we do make a furniture purchase, it’s usually something that is sturdy, small(ish), and can be used for several purchases. For our next move, I’ve promised our youngest son an art studio. Now…he’s four, and to him an “art studio” means a place to stash his markers, paper, scissors and glue. A table stuck in a corner would do him just fine. But I also want that “table” to serve more than one purpose. That’s why I selected a simple writing desk for his “studio”.

The best thing about a writing desk is that simplicity I mentioned. It’s not heavy and it’s not big. It has two drawers for stashing stuff. The Barnwood 2 Drawer Writing Desk is perfect for drawing, reading, or acting as a base for a sewing project. Removable and portable wooden crates can easily be stacked around its base or hung on the wall for additional storage. If those get lost or broken in a move, they are easily replaced.

A multi-purpose desk. It’s a win-win for our house. Now if only it did dishes and folded laundry…

  • Close the Cliché

No Two Sofa Tables Look AlikeDo an image search on a stock photography site or Google “barnwood”, and the majority of the pictures returned to you are rustic images of cowboys, horses, and other Western items against a barn backdrop. This is an association born of history; barns have housed horses, livestock, and farm equipment for centuries. They have been central to the Western way of life.

In this modern day and age, when the range of home décor includes everything from primitive to ultra-modern, barn wood furniture is very versatile. Reclaimed lumber is commonly found in homes with a Western theme, but its rustic character and sturdy features can even complement the sleek lines and hard edges of homes with contemporary decor.

A piece such as a Rustic Walnut and Barnwood Sofa Table is the perfect example of that versatility. Its simple lines allow the rustic character of the reclaimed planks to resonate with admirers. The well-worn grooves, knots, and nail holes only add to the individuality of each table. No two are ever the same. This wood is a perfect complement to a log home and a stark contrast to the hard metal and glass elements in a contemporary home. Open your mind to the possibilities of reclaimed barnwood furniture and close the cliché on “Old West”.

  • Spring Showcase

Sturdy Trellises for Vines to Climb OntoOh, how I love spring! Longer days, warmer air; the blossoms and buds and grass become lush and vibrant again. Birds sing and frogs sing the song of spring from the forest.

Another exciting aspect of spring is filling the flowerbeds. Many spaces are already occupied with perennials, but I still like to add pops of color and character with annuals nestled amongst the bushes and hosta plants. And, every year, I add “decorations” to my flowerbeds.

Because I’m a fan of rustic style, the garden accessories I choose are usually wood or wrought iron. I am really excited about the additions I’ve chosen this year! The Wrought Iron Star Garden Tripod Trellis I selected will add height and interest to my flower gardens. I love climbing vines, and the supports on the trellises will work perfectly to showcase the delicate vines. All of the trellises have a loop, so a plant can easily be hung inside the supports. What a great way to combine height, foliage, and colors!

If you haven’t already begun planning for spring planting and your summer garden, let this serve as a gentle nudge that the time is nigh! Your flowerbeds are waiting.
