  • Outdoor Cushions for Your Outdoor Log Furniture

Comfortable Outdoor CushionsOur outdoor cushions for our Cedar Looks line of outdoor log furniture by Rustic Natural Cedar are primarily manufactured from top of the line Sunbrella™ fabric which, as any cushion connoisseur knows, is the leading fabric for sun and weather resistance.  Our cushions will typically last more than 5 years outdoors in almost any climate. Not only is Sunbrella™ the best fabric for weather and fade resistance, but it is also offered in dozens of vibrant, appealing colors and patterns.

Our outdoor cushions are manufactured with lock stitch seams and tough zippers to last for years. Hand crafted in West Warwick, RI, our cushions will always have matching seams and patterns thanks to the careful attention and nimble fingers of the staff that manufactures them.

Outdoor cushions for our line of outdoor cedar log furniture are cut, sewn, and assembled by hand to ensure the highest quality product for you. Each step is carefully executed to eliminate problems and mistakes.

    The Process

First, the fabric is chosen and placed on a template. The fabric is then cut with a specialized saw and matched with the rest of the pieces for that cushion. The fabric is then sewn by hand to ensure that all stripes and patterns are set in the right direction.  Any zippers, tubing, or ties are attached to the fabric and any strings or extra fabric is snipped off.

While the fabric shell is being sewn, the foam filling is being made. The foam enters the facility in large blocks and has to be cut down to the proper size.

A large machine is used to cut the large blocks into manageable pieces. The smaller blocks are then cut, using the same specialized saw and a pattern, to the proper size for the cushion.

Once the foam and fabric shell are completed, they are brought to be put together. The foam filling is lined with a softer piece of batting that enhances the comfort of the finished product. The foam filler is then compressed to a very small size and the fabric is slipped around it. The foam is then allowed to expand to its original size and filled into the corners by hand. This process ensures that your cushions will be consistently soft and fit onto your furniture.

Once the foam has been inserted to the fabric shell, it is zipped up and placed in a plastic covering. The plastic helps the cushion stay clean until it arrives at its final destination.

The outdoor cushions are packed into boxes and shipped all over the US. Unlike other cushion manufacturers, we never fold or roll our cushion so they always arrive to you in pristine condition without creases or wrinkles.

  • Cost of Cheap Furniture: Better Value in Outdoor Log Furniture

Massive Cedar SwingsToday I’m going to talk about how to get the most bang for your buck when shopping for outdoor log furniture.   It wasn’t that long ago that you could easily find quality outdoor cedar log furniture offered by quality craftsmen and companies.  It was built with care by people who had a passion for outdoor wooden furniture.  The wood of choice for most of these craftsmen is Northern White Cedar due to the unique characteristics that cedar has.  A piece of outdoor cedar furniture will survive in the open year round for 10 – 20 years depending on where you live.  While it is still possible to find well built outdoor log furniture, one must look a bit more carefully, as a lot of large corporate garden centers are looking to cash in on the unsuspecting and uninformed.

As happens in all markets large corporate retailers are looking to make more money.  In my opinion, they do not care so much about their customers as they do about keeping their shareholders happy.  So these corporate retailers exported some American made outdoor log furniture to China.  There they were able to imitate the look but not the quality or comfort.  They build cheap furniture using brittle log furniture made of Chinese Fir.  Why should this counterfeit log furniture be a concern to you?  Let’s take a look at Chinese fir and find out.

Chinese Fir is a prized timber tree in China.  It actually isn’t a fir but is from the evergreen species.  Chinese Fir is a fine wood to use for indoor décor use.  It is actually prized in China for the smell.  Outdoors though Chinese fir furniture becomes very brittle and can become unsafe very quickly, commonly within a year.

Imagine the top log rail of a log yard swing – the rail that supports the weight of the log swing and the people sitting in the swing seat.  If you were to sit 3 people down at once in a log swing the top rail is going to bend slightly.  With a Cedar swing the wood is soft enough to give slightly at the first weight variance.  It then snaps back into place – like a rubber band though with maybe ½” of movement.  Imagine now Chinese fir that is brittle and doesn’t like to bend.  Instead of bending these logs just break under the same weight load.

Another difference you will find is that some Chinese fir log furniture is made out of small 2” diameter logs with small tenons.  As we discussed in “What is a Mortise and Tenon” you know that the larger the tenon the stronger the log furniture.  Many of the samples we have seen of this imported Chinese fir log furniture have also had mold on the logs from where the log furniture was built using wet logs and then packaged up and shipped over.

Vastly Chinese fir furniture just does not hold up as well out in the direct elements of nature as cedar log furniture does .  I bought two Chinese fir Adirondack chairs 3 years ago for testing.  I placed one of these in a covered and screened in deck.  The other was left outside.  The Chinese fir chair that was left outdoors lasted for 8 months.  The Chinese fir chair that was placed in the screened in deck is now 3 years old and is starting to show signs of weakness.  To give a comparison I have had a cedar Adirondack chairout in the open for 7 years now and it still is strong and sturdy.  I’ve had cedar log furniture outdoors for the same 7 years and it also is as strong and sturdy as it was when new.  In our enclosed deck I have 9 year old cedar log furniture that as of right now I’m guessing will last another 15 to 20 years just by the way it looks now.

Which wood has the best value in outdoor log furniture?

Quality North American outdoor cedar log furniture or Chinese fir log furniture?  Let’s compare log swingsand see:

Cedar Lake Massive Cedar Log Swing

      • life span of 9 – 15 years
      • cost of $290 including free shipping.
      • At the minimum estimated life span we get $32.33 a year.

Imported Chinese 5ft Chinese Fir Log Swing

      • life span of 1 – 2 years
      • cost of $175 at a local large retail store.
      • At the max estimated life span we get $87.50 a year.

I would say the answer is easily American made Cedar Log Furniture.

Weight limits of cedar log furniture vs Chinese fir log furniture

How figure that both swings are 3 person swings.  Our American made cedar log swing has a weight limit of 700 lbs, the imported Chinese fir swing has a weight limit of 300 lbs.  Can you even swing with your loved one on a Chinese fir log swing safely?

What is the cost of safety to you?  To me it is quite a bit – luckily as shown I can purchase the cedar log swing and it will not only be safer but will be a better value to me long term.  It will actually save me money.

Do you care about buying American made furniture?  So do I.  I’m grateful that I am able to buy American quality cedar log furniture and it will actually save me money and will support local businesses and local craftsmen who care about quality in log furniture.  Think about the long term when you purchase.  These large corporate garden centers are betting that the American public is ignorant and will just look to the bottom dollar.

At Woodland Creek’s Log Furniture Place we care about you and we care about log furniture.  You will not find dangerous imported Chinese fir outdoor log furniture on our website.  Chances are you have a local smaller garden center who believes in buying American as well.  Now that you know the difference between Chinese fir and Cedar furniture, what the real cost of cheap furniture is, you will be able to determine for yourself what the best value is when shopping for outdoor log furniture.

  • Contoured Comfort Cedar Log Tete-A-Tete by Lakeland Mills

Cedar Log Tete-a-TetesLooking for a place to relax with a special someone after a busy day?  Looking for a comfortable sitting solution for two people?   Maybe something with two chairs connected together with a table in between them.  A table that isn’t overly large but is large enough to serve multiple uses; an armrest, a place to set a cup and plate, a laptop table, etc.  Woodland Creek’s Log Furniture Place and Lakeland Mills, Inc has just the thing for you.  The Contoured Comfort Cedar Log Tete-A-Tete.

Today we are going to take a closer look at the cedar log chairs and table set commonly called the log Tete-A-Tete.  This outdoor log furniture set can be found on our website under our outdoor log furnituresection.  It is made by our co-owned factory Lakeland Mills, Inc.

You may be wondering why we chose the name tete-a-tete and how it is pronounced.  So let us start with some definitions and pronunciations.  Over the years I’ve heard at least a dozen variations of the pronunciation, there are however as far as I could find, three pronunciations that are correct:

    1. ‘tet-ə-ˈtet
    2. ‘tāt-ə-ˈtāt,
    3. tēt-ə-ˌtēt.

    The definition of tete-a-tete is

    1. a private conversation between two people
    2. a piece of furniture intended to seat two persons
    3. Involving two people, intimately private

The inspiration of the design of our cedar log Tete-A-Tete came from these definitions.  Our goal was to create a comfortable piece of wooden outdoor furniture that would allow two people two sit comfortably and enjoy the day conversing amongst themselves.

To meet this goal we incorporated into the seat our extremely comfortable contoured cedar seat slats (found on many of our Contoured Comfort log furniture pieces).  These contoured seat slats are cut out of cedar logs and are designed to conform to the natural shape of your body as you are sitting.  The result is a wooden seat that sits very comfortably due to the reduced pressure points!

We know a comfortable seat is just the start to a comfortable piece of log furniture so we moved on to the back.  We contoured the top back log so that the slats would be concaved, allowing your back to rest comfortably, again reducing pressure points.  We then adjusted the tilt of the seat and back to both be at comfortable angles.  The seat angle gives the feeling of sinking into the log tete-a-tete while the back is angled to be both relaxing while still sitting upright.

We understand that as much as a person will want to sit and relax all day in our cedar log tete-a-teteone must eventually get up.  The arms are built to be solid and strong rising upwards slightly at the front of the log tete-a-tete creating a sturdy base for your hands to assist raising the body out of the seat.

The cedar log tete-a-tete is constructed using Northern White Cedar.  Northern white cedar is naturally resistant to decay and insect damage.  Northern White Cedar is one of only a few woods that can be used for outdoor log furniture instead of pressure treated lumber because of its long life, durability, stability, and resistance to rot, insects, and fungi.  Learn more about Northern White Cedar here:  Information and Benefits of Northern White Cedar

Our cedar log tete-a-tete will come partially assembled and is easily assembled with common tools and about 15 to 20 minutes of your time.   Rust resistant zinc dichromate hardware is included as well as easy to follow directions written in English.  This is an American made product after all, made by Michigan craftsmen who care about quality and their work.

Please feel free to contact Woodland Creek’s Log Furniture Place with any questions or visit us online to purchase your Contoured Comfort Cedar Log Tete-A-Tete today.

  • Lounge in a Contoured Log Chair and Relax with Nature

Lounge chairs for the outdoorsWith spring fast approaching we are all looking forward  to being able to sit outside with friends and family, or with a good book.  Sitting outside with a nice breeze and the sun splashing a warmth across your skin.  The sweet smell of nature in the air, the soft scent of fresh blooms blossoming and the clean smell of freshly cut grass.  Birds twittering hello as you sit in your Contoured Comfort log chair lounging in the comfort of your own yard, or your own porch.

We know how valuable being able to get away to relax is.  With this in mind we created our Contoured Comfort log lounge chairs, log love seats and log settees to be extra comfortable.  In our opinion, and many others, we ended up with the most comfortable log furniture you can sit in.  What sets our line of rustic log furniture apart is our seat slats are contoured to conform to the natural shape of your body for maximum comfort and support.

We carefully hand make each rustic lounge chair using Northern White Cedar Logs – no brittle and weak imported Chinese fir logs found here!  Don’t be fooled by cheap and often uncomfortable look-a-likes.  Made from Northern White Cedar our CF1126 Contoured Comfort Log Lounge Chair is naturally resistant to rot and insect damage.

All of our logs are kiln dried thus most of the checking (cracking) will have already occurred.  Checking occurs when the logs dry and the cells shrink causing the wood to split.  We stress test all of our dried logs before putting them into production to ensure that the cracks have not weakened the logs.  Read more about checking and cracking in our article here.  Checking gives cedar log furniture its natural rustic beauty.

Our American made outdoor log chair is made by my family’s company, Lakeland Mills, Inc, in Michigan.  Our heavy duty rustic wood chairs and log furniture are built to last year after year.  We believe in supplying a quality product, a product you will be proud to display, a rustic product you will love to call your own.

Your outdoor wood chair will ship partially assembled with some basic and easy assembly required.  Read our article on how simple our outdoor log furniture is to assemble here: Outdoor Log Furniture Assembly Instructions.  Complete in the box you will find rust resistant zinc dichromate hardware and easy to follow instructions.

Remember, you can always find time to get away and relax when you don’t have to go farther than your own home.

  • What to Look For in a Log Swing

Ideal Outdoor SwingsSpring is around the corner… I think… So today let’s talk about what features to look for when purchasing a log swing.  You and your loved ones are going to be relaxing and swinging in yourlog yard swing or log porch swing so you will want to make sure that it is going to hold up.   There are multiple styles of rustic swings out on the web and in stores all varying in price and features – yet in our online store we only list a few. “Why is that?” you may wonder, “what makes one log swing better than the next?”  Let’s dig in and find out by looking at 4 main points that make a quality log swing:

First let’s take a look at the wood that is used in the construction of various rustic log swings.

    • Cedar is an excellent choice – it is the most durable outdoors due to it’s long life, stability, and resistance to rot, insects, and fungi.  Cedar logs are softer and have some give to them which enables cedar log swings to generally be stronger.
    • Pine is another choice which can hold up decently well outdoors – however you will want to make sure to keep an outdoor finish on your pine log swing as pine wood is not as durable outdoors as cedar.
    • Teak is another wood choice that holds up extremely well outdoors.  It is also very strong and very unique looking.  Teak swings and teak wood swings are becoming very popular.
    • We then move to the wood that you will not find in our online store because they will not hold up more than a year or two on average – Chinese Fir.  This wood is brittle and breaks easily.  Not something we would own ourselves so you will not find it at Woodland Creek’s Log Furniture Place.  You will usually find log swings in some larger retail stores made from Chinese Fir.  They are usually sold for about $100 less than a quality log swing that will last 10 times longer.

Second, check to make sure the logs used in the construction of the rustic swing are dry – and were dry before they went into construction.  The reason for this is because all logs check (crack) as they dry.  Using logs that have gone through the drying process allows the builder to ensure that the log has not been weakened by stress testing the log. Wet logs that are used in construction may develop cracks along vital strength points in the log swing, resulting in the swing being much weaker and not durable or safe at all.  The logs we use are all kiln dried and are then stress tested before the logs are even allowed to go into production.

The third area to look at in a rustic yard swing or rustic porch swing is the size of the chucks/tenons that are used.  The size of the chuck/tenon is what determines the overall strength of the log swing.  It doesn’t matter if the log swing is built with massive 9″ diameter logs and weighs 500 lbs.  If the chucks/tenons are small it will not be any stronger than a smaller log swing with larger chucked/tenoned connections.  In my opinion you will want a log swing that has at least 1 1/4″ – 1 1/2″ or larger chucks/tenons.  Many companies will use 3/4″ or 1″ size chucks/tenons and will hide in small print that their log swing will only support 200lbs.  Personally I enjoy sitting with my wife or friends on our log porch swing.  I can’t imagine having to hang a sign that says one person at a time and only if you weight less than xxx amount of pounds!  Keep watch out for this as there are many copy cat companies who will try to duplicate a quality log swing but will cut costs by using smaller chucks/tenons.

Fourth and last thing to look for in a rustic swing is the comfort.  Unless you are buying your swing for looks the comfort of the seat and back should be a pretty big concern.  Contoured seat slats as found on our Contoured Comfort line of log furniture (built by my family – Lakeland Mills, Inc) offer a comfortable sitting area as well as offering a sloping front seat design so the seat does not dig into the back of your knees.  I’m sure I sound biased, and I may be, but in my opinion the comfort that the contoured comfort log yard swing and the contoured comfort log porch swing offer cannot be beat.  This is not to say that a contoured seat is for everyone.  Some people may not find it comfortable or some may want a flat seat with a cushion.  If this is the case I can highly recommend the Rustic Natural Cedar line of log swings.

I hope this helps you in your search for a log swing.  As always if you have questions please feel free to contact us either through email or via our toll free phone number 877-LOG FURN  (877-564-3876)

  • Assembling Outdoor Log Furniture

Enjoy these Lounge Chairs OutdoorsI wrote a few days back on how to assemble indoor log furniture. Well, we received a few requests after that to write about what is involved with assembling outdoor log furniture. So today I’m going to talk about that.

How To Assemble Your Outdoor Log Furniture

When looking at a cedar log swing, or a log porch rocker, or a cedar log lounge chair on our site you may feel intimidated mentally breaking the piece down in your head. The truth is… assembling your outdoor log furniture is very easy. Nope, you don’t need to attached each and every back slat or each and every seat slat – it has already been done for you! All of our outdoor log furniture is sent partially assembled, so all that is needed is basic assembly. Let’s touch on a few pieces in a bit more detail.

Cedar Log Lounge Chair, Log Loveseats, Log Dining Chairs and all variations of our Outdoor Log Settees

he log lounge chair is one of our most popular sellers due to its versatility. It can be used on a porch or on a deck. Around an outdoor fireplace or in an outdoor seating area. Our log lounge chairs can even be used indoors! We are going to start with the assembly of the outdoor log lounge chair since it is so popular.

When you receive your log lounge chair it will more than likely arrive in one box. The seat will already be assembled as well as the back. The hardest part of the assembly is already done! We do it for you at the factory. What nice people we are you are probably thinking, if not… well please feel free to think that. So you have your assembled back and your assembled seat, you will simply set the assembled seat on the floor and insert the assembled back into the seat. The first step is done and it probably took you all of 30 seconds!

In your outdoor log chair box you will also find two arms, two front legs and two back legs. For the second step you are going to take the back leg and insert the doweled section into a hole on the front leg. You will then place the arm onto the doweled section of the front leg. Next check your watch, that should have taken maybe 2 minutes. Repeat the process again and you will end up with the two arm and leg sections that will attach to the seat and the back. That will complete the second step.

So 5 minutes or less has gone by and we are now heading into step 3. For this step you are going to tip the back and seat (from the first step) onto it’s side and insert the sides (the legs and arm assembly you just created in step 2) onto the 2 doweled sections of the seat. Flip the seat around and attach the other side and… nothing… that is it for step 3!

We are now on step 4 and your chair is looking like a chair after just 6 or 7 minutes, you are probably not even tired enough to sit in it yet which is good because we have a couple more steps to go through first. Ok, we have the chair sitting upright now, we are going to open up the hardware packet that came with your log chair and take out a couple lag bolts. Head around to the back of the chair and insert the lag bolts into the back upright log support – you may want to look at the instruction sheet that came with your chair – it has pictures which will probably be a lot easier to understand than this. Anyway – you will insert the lag bolts through the back upright log support and will semi-tighten the lag bolt with a 7/16″ wrench or socket. The lag bolt will screw into the arm of the arm and leg section. You will repeat this for each side. All done with step 4, let’s move on to step 5.

In the box you will have found 2 angled log braces. You are going to tip your chair on it’s back and attach the log braces the the front legs and the bottom of the seat using 4 screws – 2 for each brace. Step 5 is done and you have spent maybe 10 minutes on assembling your chair now.

Step 6 – the last step. Set your log chair on a level surface and tighten down the two lag bolts. Then take the remaining screws and secure all of the doweled joints with the screws – best to refer to the picture in the instruction sheet. This step is actually the most time consuming step and may take 5 minutes. Your outdoor log chair is now assembled and ready for use! Total time for a chair 15′ish minutes!

Cedar Log Rocking Chair, Porch Log Rocker, High Back Log Rocker and Rocking Log Love Seats

Assembly for our outdoor log rocking chairs will be the same as above with one extra step, that step will be attaching the rockers. The rockers will attach to the log chair at the bottom of the legs. Lag bolts will be included to attach the rocking sections to the legs.

Log Yard Swing and Cedar Log Porch Swings

Our log yard swings though larger than a log chair are still very easy to assemble.  The assembly is possible with a single person though it is much easier with two people.  We’ll start with the log porch swing because the assembly will be the same for it as for the log yard swings.

Swing assembly part 1.  The first step will very similar to the first step of the log chair.  Simply take the pre-assembled back and pre-assembled seat (feel free to think about how nice we are again) and attach the back into the seat.  Step 1 is short, sweet and is now complete.

or the second step you will find an arm and an arm brace in the box – you will attach the arm to the arm brace by placing the doweled portion of the brace into the hole of the arm.  Then attach the arm to the back of the swing with a lag bolt just like you did with your outdoor log chair.  Repeat this step for the opposite side of the seat.

The third step is very similar to the 6th step of the log lounge chair – you are going to secure all dowel joints with the included non rusting screws.

For the fourth step you are either going to attach the eye bolts for chains if you purchased a Rustic Natural Cedar Log Porch Swing with Chain Kit, or you are going to attach log swing bars if you purchased my family’s Contoured Comfort (Lakeland Mills, Inc) porch swing.

That’s it!  Assembling the rustic porch swings are quick and painless – they will probably take around 15 minutes to assemble as well.

For those with Log Yard Swings we have a couple more steps to go.  We are going to assemble the Log A-Frame assembly now.  The log A-frame will consist of the top log and 4 legs.  The 4 legs will attach to the ends of the top support log with bolts.  Half log braces then attach to the legs and from the legs to the top of the top log – this is the part where it is handy to have 2 people.  One person can hold one end of the A-Frame as the other attaches the half log braces.

Lift the porch swing up and attach it to your A-Frame and enjoy your new log yard swing!  We estimate assembly of a yard swing to take around 30 minutes or less.

Cedar Log Ottomans, Log Coffee Tables and Log End Tables

Outdoor log tables and rustic log ottomans also need just basic assembly.  The tops will already be assembled.  All you will have to do is attach the legs to the tops.

I would like to thank those of you who requested this article/blog writeup.  If you would like to read about something log furniture or rustic furniture related please feel free to contact me with your requests of what you would like to see me write.

  • How to Care for Your Log Furniture

Porch Swings for the Rustic HomeLog furniture is becoming more and more popular, not just in cabins and resorts but in homes and apartments as well.  The natural rustic look of log furniture is very popular because the look is soothing and relaxing.  Finishing log furniture can change the appearance slightly but it is still going to look like the same beautiful rustic log piece that it did before.  Finishing your log furniture will benefit you in the long run.

We recommend finishing your rustic furniture because wood is a porous material.  It will easily absorb the oils and dirt in our hands leaving stains on your furniture.  Hands get dirty very easily, no matter how many times a day they are washed.  Dresser handles, door handles, footboards, anything that comes in contact with your skin can stain requiring you to wash the unfinished log furniture regularly to keep the stains from becoming permanent.  A finish on the log furniture will prevent oils and dirt from absorbing into the wood.

    Outdoor Log Furniture

Northern White Cedar (Outdoor Log Furniture) and Western Red Cedar (Arches & Arbors) are some one of the most sought-after woods for many outdoor uses.  It is a fine grained durable wood, naturally pitch-free and resistant to rot and insects.  These qualities combine to make cedar a top choice for carefree living.

Before you start in making a choice of finishes, decide what effect you wish to achieve.  One of the positive characteristics of cedar is its ability to accept a wide range of finishes.  Although it does not require finishing for protection, a properly applied finish will enhance the beauty and life of a cedar piece.

    • Untreated Pine: Finish outdoor pine furniture as quickly as possible.
    • Untreated Cedar:Left untreated, Both Western Red and Northern White Cedar will weather to a beautiful soft silver-gray color similar to driftwood.  See the following picture for an example of weathered Northern White Cedar.

Although untreated cedar is natural and pleasing, it must be understood that cedar wood is a porous material and, over the long term, will need care to minimize surface problems.  In many cases where untreated cedar sits in a damp or shaded area, the wood may become discolored with mildew.

How To Clean Your Unfinished Log Furniture

A 20 percent solution of household bleach in water with one ounce of detergent per gallon will usually remove the stain.  Even after years of exposure, cedar can be refinished to a bright, clean appearance with this solution.  A high pressure water sprayer will also help to remove the weathered color effects.

    Finishing Your Log Furniture

    • Stain Finishing: There are a wide variety of penetrating stains, many of which retain much of the wood’s natural color and texture while adding a protective element.  For outdoor use we recommend the outdoor stains/finishes that include water repellent additives, mildew inhibitors (mildicides), and UV inhibitors.  Penetrating stains go into the wood without forming a surface barrier so avoid the problems of blistering and peeling of painted surfaces.  They work well on wood with knots and deep surface texture.
    • Paints: Before deciding to paint cedar, it must be realized that the natural color and grain of the wood will be concealed.  If you choose to paint, apply the product according to the manufacturer’s directions for the best protection and good service.  A good alternative to paint is a stain that has been pigmented with the color you want.  This will give the look of painted cedar log with the protection of an outdoor finish.

    Outdoor Log Furniture Finish Options

You have the option of ordering the Contoured Comfort and Nature’s Twist log furniture pieces with an outdoor finish on our website:  Woodland Creek’s Log Furniture Place.  When you do so your pieces of log furniture will go through a multi-coat finishing process.  This in-depth process will insure that all parts of the logs are coated with our outdoor stain/finish.  Our outdoor stains will protect the wood against harmful UV rays and have an anti-mildew agent built in.  As with all outdoor stains and finishes, the outdoor stains will need to be reapplied over time.  Depending on the weather/climate the stain could last one year to five plus years – it varies with all the different climates the log furniture could be in.

You may use any type of outdoor sealant to refinish your furniture as desired.  The outdoor stain/finish that we use has been pigmented with a slight color to provide a finish that brings out the natural highlights of the cedar wood.  Here is an example of our Contoured Comfort 4 ft Love Seat, Coffee Table, and Rocking Chair made by our co-owned factory Lakeland Mills, Inc finished in our cedar tone finish:

Pine log outdoor furniture should be finished as soon as possible to ensure a long life out of the wood as pine does not have all of the characteristics that cedar has.

    Indoor Rustic Furniture Care

Indoor log furniture that has been finished needs virtually no extra care. Just a dusting as needed.  If you would like to keep your rustic furniture unfinished we recommend washing the wood regularly with a mild wood soap to keep dirt and oils from the skin from permanently staining the logs and wood.

  • Cedar vs. Pine - Which Rustic Furniture is Better?

Experience Outdoor Log FurnitureFor indoor rustic furniture cedar and pine are both a fine choice.  In fact we mix pine and cedar in many of our rustic dressers, chests, nightstands, desks, bookcases, etc. Pine will be used for the framing while Cedar is used as trim and handles. The cedar (Northern White Cedar) and pine (White Pine) that we use are extremely similar in color allowing this mixing of wood types. The main difference between the two is Cedar will tend to have more knots and streaks of color in the grain.

All of the log beds from Woodland Creek’s Log Furniture Place whether they are made of White Cedar, Red Cedar, Pine, Aspen, Hickory, or Barn Wood all are extremely strong. So pick out the bed whose style you like the most and rest assured that any log or rustic bed you purchase from Woodland Creek’s will last a lifetime.

For outdoor log furniture, unfinished Cedar will last longer than unfinished Pine. Cedar is known for being naturally resistant to decay and most insects and thus is one of the best woods to use outdoors. When left unfinished Cedar will weather to a silvery gray color.  Pine, when regularly treated with an outdoor protective sealant, will also last for quite a few years outdoors. So again, choose the style that you like with the upkeep of the furniture in mind.   One of the reasons we carry so many different styles of rustic furniture is so that you will find the style that fits your tastes.
