Solid wood rustic furniture has a charm and grace all of its own, making it work well in any style of home or property, but there are a few additions that can make it shine even more. We’re not talking about colored stains, but rather artisan touches and accompanying accessories that bring out the best in real wood. Here are a few of our favorites:
Stripped bark
A tried and tested way to let the inner beauty of various wood varieties shine, bark stripping never fails to raise a smile. From the heavy-hitting aromatic red cedar to the creamy northern white cedar and even herbal-smelling aspen, stripped spindled logs are a stunning addition to any piece of solid wood furniture. We particularly love them as part of a log bed design.
Forged metal handles
Imagine going to the trouble of sourcing a fabulous piece of rustic furniture and then finishing it with cheap or mismatched handles. What a travesty! We have a serious affinity for forged metal strap handles and have used them in a number of our designs. They keep the artistry flowing through every facet of our designs but they also have unbeatable longevity and won’t ever date a piece. Timeless and made by talented people, what a combination.Â
Artistic carving
We are absolutely biased here, because we happen to have some of the best wood carvers in the business as part of our trusted team, but you can’t deny that a stylish and well-conceived design adds a whole new level of ‘wow factor’ to any finished item. Add in some metal inlay, glass or stain and you can take things up another notch too, because there’s no limit to a true artist’s imagination and skill.
Complementary textiles
A stunning wooden bed with some gorgeous handcrafted quilts, or a coffee table with a stylish runner. How about a rustic dining table with an antique tablecloth for special occasions? The right textiles really add something different to any piece of solid wood furniture, especially if they are homemade. A few crocheted placemats would look wonderful in a rustic kitchen/diner or how about some grandma-made comforters on the kids’ bunk beds? Beautiful!
Live edges
Leaving some live edges not only adds an element of interest and uniqueness to your furniture, it also makes for a very fashionable statement. Choosing to let the flow and shape of the solid wood dictate your finished piece shows a respect for the materials being used and also lets the wood speak for itself. It also lets people know that you didn’t buy something mass produced and a little bragging rights never hurt anybody.
Mirror polishing
Finally, a traditional mirror polished finish is a wonderful way to give your solid wood furniture extra oomph. In a world where shabby chic styling has gone crazy and colored stains are on trend, taking things back to a more understated finish is unusual, but beautiful. Any of you out there with walnut pieces will know that a mirror polish makes them look utterly incredible and without any fancy tricks or accessories.
Solid wood doesn’t need much to look incredible, but when you want it to be the unadulterated star of the show, try using a few of these tips and tricks for added impact.
